Bookmark and Share Legal & General Assurance Society, A Mixed-Use Development in Crowthorne ______

Legal & General Assurance SocietyVolterra recently supported Legal & General's case to build a mixed-use development in Crowthorne, in Bracknell Forest. The development would provide just under 1,000 residential units, and 100 sqm of office space. Bridget Rosewell gave evidence at the Public Inquiry in October 2008. The decision is expected in 2009.

The development would fall in the Western Corridor and Blackwater Valley sub-region of the South East, one of the fastest growing parts of the UK. Volterra's work concluded that there was economic need for large scale development here, in the centre of a still developing agglomeration of high-tech and knowledge based firms.

The proposed development would be a natural form of regeneration, in which new activities which offer more value added replace old ones which have become less necessary or profitable. It is essential for the continued health of communities and the economy that such replacement is possible. Furthermore, the site falls in the centre of a successful and growing agglomeration of high value activities which are recognised nationally and regionally as important sectors and clusters, the growth of which are to be supported and encouraged.

The site in question is one of the few at the heart of the cluster which will permit this style and scale of offer. Supporting the UK's comparative advantage and future success requires that it is enabled to develop.
